3D Glitter Web Glow in the Dark Spider Craft

We’re having so much fun with these Styrofoam craft balls.  When they are sawed in half there are so many things you can make!   They seem to always be a hit with the kids. Especially when there is some glitter thrown on there.

So far we’ve used these foam balls to make Christmas ornament art, dancing spiders, spider pencil toppers and now these smaller glow in the dark spiders on glitter webs!  Just click on the pics below and it will take you to those posts.

We’ve done one more as well that I have yet to get posted and there are so many other ideas rolling around in this momma’s head.  There just aren’t enough hours in the day!

Materials you need to make a Glow in the Dark Spider on a Glitter Web:

  • 1-  1″ Styrofoam craft ball for the head
  • 1-  3″ Styrofoam craft ball sawn in half for the body
  • Glitter
  • Clear School Glue
  • Black Permanent Marker
  • Ruler
  • Square Canvas
  • Googly Eyes if desired
  • A Toothpick
  • Green Chenille Pipe Cleaners
  • Glow in the Dark Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Acrylic Paint

NOTE:  If you want the glow in the dark to work best, don’t make your spider black, at least not the legs.  We had the best luck with green.  Though even without the glow in the dark they are a ton of fun!

Making Your Spider

Step 1:  Saw the larger Styrofoam ball in half.  I find a bread knife works great.  It’s a bit messy, but worth it!

Step 2:  Push a toothpick into the body and push the smaller Styrofoam ball onto the other side of the toothpick to attach the head. Alternatively, you could use a glue gun and just glue it on.

Step 3:  Take another toothpick and make 8 holes for the legs.

Step 4:  Cut your pipe cleaners into 8 – 3″ pieces for the legs. Insert the legs and bend them so they look like spider legs.

Step 5:  Glue on the googly eyes. Paint your spider and allow to dry.

Step 6:  Once the paint is completely dry, apply a generous amount of Glow in the Dark Paint to your spider. I just squeezed out a nice thick line of it right onto the legs.

Making the Glitter Web:

Step 1:  Grab you square canvas, ruler, and permanent marker.  Make a line from each corner to the opposite corner.  A line from the top center to bottom center.  And a line from the center side to the opposite side.

Step 2:  Now make curved lines around and around until you have a web.

Step 3:  Cover all the web lines with clear school glue and coat it in glitter.

Step 4:  Shake off all the glitter, add your spider and enjoy!
