Big Dancing Spider Craft

halloween craft decoration kids craft

This spider is a blast. They look fantastic hanging on the wall or on the door. If you’re looking for a great Halloween decoration or Halloween craft to do with your kiddos, look no further. You can attach a string to it to, take it on a walk and make it dance. The pipe cleaner legs provide tons of wiggly entertainment and even  make a creepy tapping sound as it wriggles around!

Now watch him dance to some music! HAHA. It’s so good.

Your kiddos can paint the spider, help glue on the eyes, and help stick on the legs after you make some holes for them with a toothpick.

Educational Opportunity:

Want to take it a step further?  Make a trip to your local library and take out some books about spiders.  Maybe they can pick one out and try to make their spider look the same.

For the kindergarten or preschool years the book The Very Busy Spider, by Eric Carle, is a great choice. The spider is greeted by different farm animals throughout the story but the little spider is too busy to stop and talk. The animal sounds and texture on the pages are sure to keep your little one engaged, and the repetition makes the book predictable and fun.

If your children are a bit older you could consider reading Charlotte’s Web, by E.B. White, together. It’s such a beautiful classic.

Taking time to look for spiders on a hike, or you know, in the basement 😉, is also a must.

I found a website called Studdyladder, that offers a number of great free resources, including this spider anatomy worksheet.  There are many other spider resources as well on there.

They have worksheets for all ages, and a premium option which offers a ton of other services, tutorials etc… I haven’t yet thoroughly explored it yet though.

If you click the photo it will take you to their spider resource page.

Step-By-Step:

Simple Craft Supplies Required:

  • 5-6″ Styrofoam Ball
  • 2-3″ Styrofoam Ball
  • Toothpicks
  • Paper Clip
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Paint – I favor acrylics – I love how fast they dry.
  • Googly Eyes
  • Glue stick and Glue gun

Step 1:  Cut the large Styrofoam Ball into two halves. Using a bread knife or another knife if you don’t happen to have one, find the seam of the large Styrofoam ball and run the knife along it to start the cut. Pull the knife backwards towards you to cut (obviously this an adult job), then roll the ball and knife forward and repeat this motion until it splits. This is easier than trying to simply saw back and forth. It’s a bit messy… but worth it.

Step 2:  Warm up your glue gun. Push a tooth pick into the body leaving 1/2 an inch or so sticking out.  Put some glue around the base of the toothpick and push the head on.

Step 3:   Get out your paints and have some fun painting your spider however you like!

Step 4:  Once your paint is dry, glue on the eyes.  Take another toothpick and poke holes into the body for the legs.  Bend the full length pipe cleaners in half. Let your child insert the pipe cleaner legs.

Step 5:  Straighten  out a paperclip and bend a small portion of one end over to make a loop.  Fasten some string around the loop.  Stick the straight end of the paperclip into the top of the spiders back if you want to walk it and make it dance, or if you’d rather hang it onto the wall, or a door, stick the paperclip into the butt.

One of my boys did a black widow.  It looks so cool!
