Waste Less Food with this Free Printable

We all know food waste is a big problem.  Our cultural wastefulness is a HUGE problem.  Look at these statistics below about food waste in America…

“58% of food produced in Canada is lost or wasted each year.”

The average Canadian household spends $1, 766 on food that is wasted each year.”

“Food waste costs Canada’s economy more than 49 BILLION each year.”

These statistics were pulled from Food Waste In Canada, check it out here,  Food Waste In Canada: The Facts.   It’s eye-opening…

The US doesn’t fare any better.

“The United States is the global leader in food waste, with Americans discarding nearly 40 million tons of food every year.1 That’s 80 billion pounds of food and equates to more than $161 billion2, approximately 219 pounds3 of waste per person and 30-40 percent4 of the US food supply. Most of this food is sent to landfills; food is the single largest component taking up space inside US landfills.5 In fact, it makes up 22 percent of municipal solid waste (MSW).6″

Its terrible to think that millions of people are hungry and all this food is just being thrown away isn’t it.  More than this, is has environmental repercussions. Production of these foods uses energy, water and creates green house gases which is said to be effecting climate change. Not to mention the plastic bags that many still use to get their produce and groceries. Groceries that just get tossed.

I can bet that one of the main reasons your here is because of the economic effect. It costs MONEY!  Your hard earned money.

It’s not all negligence of course, so don’t be too hard on yourself.  There are many factors and the issue is quite complex.  Food Waste in America says:

“Getting to the bottom of what causes food waste in America is a challenge that traverses the complex landscapes of socioeconomic disparities, confusion, and ingrained beliefs, layered with human behaviors and habits.”

As a mom of five, I sincerely try my best to plan meals, find the sales, use our food timely, buy healthy food, but even with my best efforts I still find myself throwing away food – because LIFE.

I have already saved food waste in my home just with this SIMPLE reminder on my fridge.  Print one out for yourself and share with a friend! Something needs to be done about our food waste.

This printable will be that in your face reminder of what is behind those closed doors.

Let’s face it, out of sight – out of mind.  Buying enough food to last a week, making the complex meals, our fortunate families in America are accustomed to enjoying, it’s hard to keep track of all the ingredients.  And as a busy mom with chronic mom brain, having this friendly reminder in my face really helps me stay on track and remember what goodies are ready to eat in the fridge.

Just today, I have saved some strawberries that were on their way out. They were still good to eat fresh today, but wouldn’t have been tomorrow.  An old sweet potato sitting by the wayside was made into some healthy vegan ‘cheese”  (Abram’s Amazing Sweet Potato Cheese, check it out!), some leftover lettuce, and bacon that got buried under some other meats in the fridge was remembered!

This simple reminder can help you waste less food too! Print it, and laminate it to make it dry erase friendly.  You’re on your way to saving some money, helping the planet and better fridge management.

The PDF has TWO options:

1. A Blank Version:  Just jot down the foods you know are on the way out or close to expiry.

2. A Table with Food and Expiry Date Columns:  This print has columns for the highly organized momma. A column for the food and a column for the expiry date.
