The Best ❤ Dairy-Free Hot Chocolate Mix

What makes this dairy-free hot chocolate the best?

The addition of chocolate chips,  the tastiest milk alternative, and a free printable gift tag to go with it, so you can gift this deliciousness to others too.

As a mother to a child with food allergies, I can tell you that a food gift with restrictions respected and considered, is GOLD.  They are so greatly appreciated, and make you feel so loved. I included an ingredient list you could put on the back of the gift tag so they can see first-hand what is in it and feel at ease.

We can’t have nuts in our home because of my sons allergy. Perhaps if nuts were possible we would still use an almond milk. If you do substitute this recipe with an oat milk, or nut milk that you prefer, you should likely omit the cornstarch as it won’t be necessary. Rice milk is thinner, which is why it’s included in the recipe.

I have 5 children including dairy loving ones who aren’t quick to ingest ‘non-dairy’ foods. This recipe pasts the test.  We’ve also sampled a number of dairy-free alternatives over the years and have found Natura Organic Rice Milk to be our favorite. It has a subtle flavor so works well with cereals, and is naturally quite sweet without the addition of sugar! So if you can manage to find some Natura rice milk I recommend it.

Having a child with allergies or intolerances really pushes you out of your comfort zone. And can be SO frustrating and discouraging.

People who haven’t experienced it may not understand the emotion that accompanies your child not being included in these things. Not just the child’s emotions, the parents too! Treats at school, church. Hot chocolate for the Christmas parade…  You just want your child to be happy and live a ‘normal’ life.

This recipe will help fill the hot chocolate void! You still need someone amazing to go out of their way and prepare it. But, now you’re here! So problem solved.  😊

Further, this recipe makes hot chocolate a snap to make. I always have some on hand for those special moments or snow days. It takes minutes to heat and serve, and your loved one can have a hot chocolate as equally as delicious…. perhaps even MORE delicious than their company.

Decadent chocolate chips, a sweet organic rice milk, and printable gift tags are what earn this recipe it's title. It is the BEST!
Prep Time 3 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Servings 10

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (omit if using a thicker 'milk')
  • 2 tbsp dairy-free chocolate chip
  • Natura Organic Rice Milk

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in the container or jar of choice and mix well.
  • To prepare the hot chocolate, mix 1.5 tablespoons of mix with 1 cup of rice milk in a pot.
  • Heat over med-high heat, stirring intermittently, until it's steaming and the chocolate has melted and become incorporated.
  • Pour, serve, and enjoy!

Notes

Rice milk is generally quite a bit thinner than a number of other milk alternatives, so cornstarch is included to add some depth to the hot chocolate.
If you're using a nut milk, or oat milk, you'll want to omit this ingredient.

Check out my other recipe. I have a dairy-free sweet potato cheese that is a life-changer!

And have you ever considered learning to crochet?   There’s nothing like sitting down with a hot cup of chocolate and your current project! The BEST! Check out the Learn to Crochet Page to get started.
