Healing Whole Chicken Bone Broth
I’ve developed this simple recipe over the years and have tweaked it to perfection for our family.
You can tell by look, taste, and texture that store broths don’t hold a candle to these homemade power houses.
Bone broths are full of readily available minerals that are easy for your body to absorb and benefit from. Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and more! This broth is a must have for every family’s diet.
And you only need 6 ingredients, plus water!
Ingredients:
- 1 whole chicken
- 1/2 tsp curry powder
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 2 tablespoons Italian Seasoning
- 2 tablespoons of salt
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
Equipment:
- 6 quart (24 cups) crockpot or larger
You can easily tweak this recipe to include the blends of herbs and spices your family likes best. But don’t leave out the curry, and turmeric. These contribute a lot to that classic flavor and color. Not to mention the addition of even more anti-inflammatory benefits.
Processing Time:
Your broth is going to simmer for two nights in the crockpot. Boiling the whole chicken in the crockpot on day one is just getting the broth started and will provide you with fresh cooked chicken for whatever delicious recipe you have in store.
The next night of simmering is what really breaks down the bones and ensures you are getting all they have to offer, including an amazing flavor.
Don’t cut the time.
If you cut the time, you can ensure you will lose out on taste. But trust me, it’s easy. The crockpot really does all the work.

It always pains me to throw out animal fats, skin, and nutrients. But I have found ways to utilize much of these.
The skin fries up nice and crunchy – just make sure to have a lid on, and remove the pan from the element to cool before flipping the skin when frying because the fats will be spitting out of the pan.
How much broth does this recipe yield?
This recipe makes 16 cups of broth, which is an awesome yield from one chicken.
If you only have one or two members in your family, learning to pressure can could be a skill to learn to save the broth. If not the freezer is always a good choice to preserve any extras.

Step – By – Step
Step 1: Place the whole chicken in the crockpot and fill the crockpot with water.
Step 2: Add the apple cider vinegar and salt.
Step 3: Turn on high, and boil for 3-4 hours until the chicken is fall of the bones.
Step 4: Remove the skin (Fry it up for yummy cracklings if you want!). Separate all the meat from the bones. Return the bones to the crockpot and use the chicken however you desire.
Step 5: Turn the crockpot to low and leave overnight. Top up the water level before bed.
Step 6: In the morning, stir the broth, and add all the spices. Let it continue to cook on low for another night. Again, check the water level before bed.
Step 7: Turn of the crockpot in the morning and allow the broth to cool before straining out the bones.
Step 8: Add enough water to make 16 cups of broth, taste test to see if you want to add anymore salt/pepper or spice.
Step 9: Enjoy your heart healthy, healing, hearty broth! Well, that was a mouthful.😉
