Crochet Flower Mason Jar Toppers

A special gift like handmade preserves deserves to be adorned with something equally as beautiful and special. These toppers do just that and are so versatile.

I love flowers, so naturally, these are the very first toppers I made.  But, I hope to make a ton of variations.  A dear friend recommended butterflies so that is next.   I’d love to hear your ideas. Leave a comment!

These covers work up quickly.  You’ll have plenty of time before the holidays to whip  some up.

They look stunning arranged in a basket.  I found some great baskets from a local thrift store.  Now I’d be ecstatic to receive a basket full of preserves.  But receiving one full of handmade-with-love, never-wilting flowers… IS NEXT LEVEL!

There are so many different colour combinations you could make.  I adore mint and many other shades of blue.  White and cream are other favorites around my home.  But you can easily pick your favorite colors and make these toppers your own.

Enough chatter…

Let’s make something beautiful!

1/2 Pint and Pint Mason Jar Covers

With the brown yarn and your 4.5mm crochet hook, make a magic circle.

If you don’t know how to make a magic circle, check out the simple tutorial below and learn.  You’ll be so glad you did.

Or ch5 and join with a slst to create a loop to crochet into instead.

How to Make the Magic Circle

Round 1:  Ch1. Sc10 in the circle.  Tighten the circle.  Slst to join.  (10sts)

Round 2:  Ch2.  Dc2 in each st around.  Join with a slst.  (20sts)

Round 3:  Ch2.  *Dc1, 2dc in the next st.*  Repeat * to * around.  Join with a slst.  (30sts)

Rounds 4&5:  Ch2. Dc1 in each st around. Join with a slst.  (40sts)

This next round will make the spaces for the tie or a ribbon.

Round 6: Ch2. Dc1 in the same st. *Ch1, sk1, dc1 in each of the next 2 sts.* Repeat * to * around. You’ll end the round with a Ch1, sk1 and 1dc.  Join with a slst.  (40sts)

The next round will create our edging.

Round 7:  Do not ch  Dc5 in the next st.  (you can make the dc in the space if you prefer it makes more sense – the space counts as the next st). Sk1. Slst into the next st.  *5Dc in the next st (the space), sk1, slst into the next st.*  Repeat * to * around.  Finish with a slst into the first st of the round.

Tie off.  Weave in the ends.

Making the Chain Tie

Ch80.  Tie off.  Make a knot at the end of each side of the chain and trim the ends off.  I like to make the tie the same colour as the flower, so I used mint.

Insert each end into the spaces we made, starting where we tied off and weaved in our ends.  Insert the ends starting from the outside and going in.  Weave each strand in and out until you reach the front, and make a sweet little bow.

 Making the Flower

With your 4.5mm hook and colour of choice for flower.  I used mint. Ch.85.  Leave a long tail to sew up the flower.  And leave a long tail at the end as well, to use to sew onto the mason jar topper.

Row 1:  Dc into the 5th st from the hook. *Ch1, Dc1 in the next st.*  Repeat * to * to the end.

Row 2:  Turn.  6dc in the first ch-space, sc in the next ch-space.  *6dc in the next ch-space.  Sc in the next ch-space.*  Repeat * to * until you reach the end.

Tie off.

Curl it up,  secure it by taking one of the tails through the petals diagonally a few times around the flower.
