Easy Crochet Chain Easter Egg Garland

If you know to make a basic crochet chain and how to slip stitch, you can make this sweet egg garland!

I’m sure there are so many fun elements you could add to it as well. I’m thinking some wood beads, or flowers.

Personalize it with your own specially decorated eggs. The possibilities are endless. There are so many fun egg decorating options.  I can already hear the giggles and fun in the making.

Here are some my personal favorites when it comes to egg decorating…

1. Hand Painted Blown-Out Easter Eggs

The ones in the picture above aren’t painted – yet. You could use boiled eggs, but it would be very heavy for the garland, so I recommend trying these fun blown-out Easter eggs.

Get a bowl with soapy water to wash the eggs, and a bowl to catch the whites and yoke. Carefully poke a hole at each end of the egg, making one hole a bit larger than the other. A tiny pointy screwdriver worked fine for me. Tap, tap, tap like a little chick and it will make a nice little hole.

Next, mix up the yoke with a pointy tool like a tooth pick, and blow out the egg through the larger hole by blowing into the smaller hole. Then dry and decorate them! Unlike boiled eggs you can keep these eggs for years.  They are light weight, delicate and look so natural and lovely in the garland.

2. Blood Red Eggs

Blood red eggs are always a stunning addition to our table. I bet they would look fantastic in this garland.  They are incredibly simple to make and are naturally dyed. The reaction that takes place between yellow onion skins, white vinegar and  the eggs, creates this amazing rich red color.

They’re such a vivid reminder of Christ’s blood that was shed for our sins. These red eggs hold cultural significance to Greek families  at Easter, and are also used to play a fun game too! Check it out here on Greece by a Greek. They go into all this a bit further.

3. Tea-Dyed Eggs

Tea dyed eggs are also a naturally dyed favorite of mine. Simple but beautiful results. For these eggs, you find some small leaves, wrap them around the egg, wrap them in some pantyhose or carefully wrapped cheesecloth and boil them with tea. When the wrapping is removed the part of the egg covered with the leaves should have remained undyed and a print created.

Not up for a lot of egg decorating this year? Find some fun plastic eggs, they look great as well. The standard size fits best.

Easter is one of our favorite holidays.  It’s moments like decorating eggs with my children that I treasure. I hope you have the chance to enjoy some egg decorating this year as well.

Let’s get to the garland!

Materials:

  • Cotton Fair Yarn – Weight – 2 Fine
  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors
  • Ruler

Gauge: 12ch stitches = 2″

Ch.10. Join to first ch. This creates a little loop to hang the garland from.

***Ch.40. Place a stitch marker or bobby pin on the last stitch you made. This will make it easier to find. (The ch.40 section should be approx. 7.25 – 7.5 ” long.)

Ch.34. Slip stitch back into the first stitch you marked. (The ch.34 section should be approx. 6.25″ long.)

*Ch34. Slip stitch to the opposite side of the same stitch you marked.* This should create two loops that criss-cross at the bottom.

Repeat * to * one more time so there are 3 chain loops around.

Check to ensure your loops criss-cross properly. You need to be able to create 6 spaces like the one below.

Slip stitch 1 back into the main garland chain.***

Repeat *** to *** until your garland is as long as you please.

To complete your garland, Ch50. Slip stitch into the 10th ch from the hook to create the little loop to hang the garland with at the opposite end.

To make the tassels:

1. Cut 6 strands of yarn approximately 9-10 inches long.

2. Put 2 strands into each segment.

3. Wrap around your finger and pull all the ends through with your crochet hook.

4. Cut the tassel to 1.5″ long.

Now all you have to do is make some memories decorating eggs and hang them up!
